For over four hundred years the people of Spain have made their way to the shores of North America. It started with Columbus sailing on behalf of Spanish royalty. His voyages initiated the process of Spanish colonization as early as 1565 in Florida and 1598 in New Mexico. Since then there has been a continuous flux of immigration into the United States by Hispanic speaking peoples with genealogies that can be traced back to Spain.

Like any other genealogical search, the key to finding your Spanish roots lies in going from the known to the unknown. Once you have positively identified your immigrant ancestor in census or other records here in the United States, look for records that list a place of origin in the old country. Finding a parish of origin is absolutely critical to your search because records in Spain that will identify families and prove relationships were kept on a local basis--usually by village or parish.

One common twist for Spanish families immigrating into the United States is that most of them came first into a neighboring Spanish speaking country such as Cuba, Mexico or Argentina. Since 1820 only a handful of emigrants averaging around 2000 per year have come directly from Spain to the United States. The key to your parish of origin may well lie within the records of a neighboring country.

Tracing Spanish Ancestry

Start with family records to find your parish of origin. Believe it or not, this is your best shot! You may be surprised at the information your extended family members may have about your ancestor. Someone may have photos, letters, mementos or a family bible that may list a village in Spain.

After you have exhausted family records look for church records. Spain is predominantly Catholic and you may find your village of origin in a baptism, marriage or burial record in the Catholic Church records here in the United States. You may find it in the records of a neighboring country. Many of Mexico's parish church records have been filmed and indexed and can be searched on a country level. Other records that may help are birth, marriage and death certificates, obituaries, naturalization records, voter registrations, military pension files, passport applications or ship passenger lists.

Passenger lists that were published after 1892 give the place of birth of the traveler--and most usually a destination upon arrival which can also be helpful. If your ancestor was one of the many who came first to a neighboring Latin-speaking country, U.S. border-crossing records give the same information as passenger lists.

There are also records for emigrants leaving Spain. For those emigrating before 1790 there are passenger lists kept in the General Archives in Seville. The emigrant lists for the years 1500-1599 have been published and are available in most larger libraries here in the United States. Seventeenth and Eighteenth century passenger lists are available online through the Portal de Archivos Espanoles.

Once you find a parish of origin for your ancestor, the next task is locating the parish in Spain. A good Spanish atlas is a must. Places in Spain from smallest to largest: Lugar (village); municipio (municipality); parroquia (parish); and provincia (province). Any one or a combination of these could have been used by an ancestor when he was asked his place of origin. There are both civil divisions and ecclesiastical divisions in Spain, and the same place-name could have been used for both. If you don't find your ancestor in one, be sure to check the other.

There are about 23,000 parish archives throughout Spain that make up the 70 Catholic dioceses. The Guia de la Iglesia en Espa�a (Madrid: Oficina de Estadistica, 1951) is a published guide that breaks down each diocese by parish and tells when the records began for about 90% of the parishes in Spain. Over 30% of the parish records for Spain have been microfilmed and are available to order from any local family history center. Each of these centers are a local extension to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. To see what has been filmed check the online catalog at Family Search by entering the name of the parish in a place search. If you find your parish has been filmed you can visit your local center to order the film for viewing.

Once you are in the parish records and have positively identified your ancestor, the chances are very good that the records in that same parish will take you back multiple generations through the records of your family. Baptism, marriage and death records kept locally through the parish church most often list the birth place of parents and sometimes grandparents. Marriage records will most likely show the name of the parish where both the bride and groom were baptized.

Spain has always kept impeccable records. If the church records for your parish did not survive, there are two comprehensive civil records that may help: notarial records and civil registration.

Notarial records are kept on a provincial level with but a few exceptions and are not unlike the county records kept in any local courthouse in the United States. Here one can find legal records such as wills, estate records, civil marriage contracts and records dating back literally hundreds of years.

After 1870, civil registration records in Spain are some of the best in the world because of the amount of family detail found in them. There are also a few earlier civil registers covering the years 1839-1869 available on a municipal level. Civil registration records have not been filmed, but if you are lucky enough to pinpoint a parish or municipality for your ancestor, you can write to the local court (juzgado) for a copy. There is a 2-6 month turnaround for a reply.

As extensive as both Notorial and civil registration records are, they can sometimes be difficult to use--especially for the beginner. Keep in mind that if parish records have survived there will be enough detail in the records to take your family back generations. But it is nice to know that if you need to verify information in the parish record these government records can help.

In the end, the entire research process in Spain hinges upon a parish of origin for your Ancestor. With a little perseverance, even the novice researcher should have success finding several generations or more using local parish church and government records. Caza feliz!

Here is my quick list of the top five dating sites in Spain. I’ll go into more detail in my reviews later in this article.

If you’re looking for love in Spain, you are in luck because there are several dating sites and apps that are quite active and will give you the best chance to succeed in this country. For the best results, try to stay close to a city with a lot of single people, like Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, or Valencia.

In contrast to Portugal’s online dating scene, Spain has a wide variety of dating sites and apps from which to choose. This is a double-edged sword however because the increased choice can make it difficult to determine which one you should sign up for. There are a lot of sites and apps out there that promise the world but don’t deliver. My job in this post is to explain which dating sites and apps you need to focus on.

Without further ado, here are my detailed reviews of the top five dating sites in Spain.

Founded in 2001 and based in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, Meetic.es is the best dating site in Spain.

Meetic.es is the Spanish version of Meetic.com. The site resembles DatingDirect and Match, so if you have used those sites in the past, you will be familiar with the format. You will need a premium membership in order to get the most out of this site. So, if you are in Spain and willing to pay, then this is the site for you.

The sign-up process is similar to other dating sites. You will need to provide your name, email address, and your birthday. From there, simply fill out what your perfect match would be and a little bit about yourself so that others can find you.

It is important to upload a good image of yourself. Studies have shown that profiles with images receive more attention than those without an image.

Don’t forget to add a tagline to make yourself stand out in the sea of people. What you say can be anything from a joke to catch someone’s attention, to a catch phrase.

There are two ways that you can browse different profiles. The advanced search narrows the possibilities down even further by allowing you to search for someone specific. If you go for tall women, you can search for that trait. Or if you like you’re her to be a non-smoker, you can find that too. The searches are basic, but help in the hunt for that someone who will best complement you.

There is also a unique feature that lets you flaunt your imperfections. The #LoveYourImperfections tag lets you find someone who is flawed, maybe a huge Star Wars fan or a comic book fiend.

These little imperfections are what someone may find charming and cute, so don’t underestimate this option during your sign-up process. No matter how you search for someone, you can save the results and sort through them at a different time.

If sorting through all the different profiles becomes too much, there is always the Shuffle option that randomly picks out profiles for you based on your criteria. From there, you can either “like” or “dislike” a profile and move through the list.

You will be sent a message when there is a possible match when you “like” a profile, which speeds up the process a little.

How to Communicate with Other Members

Once you found someone that tickles your fancy, you can send a flirt/wink, which on this site is known as a “Flash.” However, if you have not upgraded your account to premium, there isn’t much you can do but “Flash” someone.

Paid members have the option of connecting with others via text messages, but free members have fewer options. As a free user, you can only give others a small smile or send them a simple question. The responses that you get back help you determine which users you’d like to know more about.

Parship.es has been around for several years now. This site first launched in 2001 and went international in 2002. Parship is available not only in Spain, but also in Italy, Sweden, England, France, Holland and even Mexico.

The dating system requires a personality test. The test is well thought out and asks a lot of questions for you to answer to match you with the best possible members.

Parship is for those who are serious about finding someone, so if you live in Spain, sign up for this site. Although it will take a lot of time to get through the signup process and testing, it is worth it.

The startup process is basic. Simply fill out your name, gender, email address, and then create a password.

The next part is the test. This will take you 20-60 minutes to complete. Be honest with your answer and take your time. Most of the questions are multiple choice. However, there are a few questions that ask about your personal taste between two images. The test is lengthy to weed out those who are not interested in a serious relationship and give up mid-way through the test.

Once you are finished with the test, you will notice your profile is only 35% complete. Don’t get discouraged, this dating site is set up to help you find the best possible match and will be well worth the effort to complete your entire profile.

How to Locate Potential Matches

While most dating sites have a very basic browsing feature, Parship system isn’t as straightforward when it comes to browsing for potential matches. The test you completed is now being compared to other likeminded individuals and shows how well the two of you would get along. This is based on the score you will see next to their profile.

While you are browsing through the different profiles, you may notice that some of the images are blurry and hard to see. The blurry images are because members must grant you access to their profile, or you need to sign-up for a premium membership to see profiles that have been made public.

Unlike other sites that display the member’s name, with Parship, you will see the person’s occupation instead. While this can get confusing, it is best to give each profile a nickname to remember who is who.

How to Communicate with Other Members

Parship is unique when it comes to communicating with members. While you do have the option of sending a match a text message, with Parship there are other ways to communicate, but you must have at least 50% of your profile filled out to do so.

You can release your pictures to potential matches, send them a smile, or send them a quiz for them to answer. However, your profile will tell your potential match more than you think because of how detailed your profile is.

Premium members can see their completed test which is a 40-page psychological evaluation. The test results explain the type of person you are down to how well you communicate, to how well you participate in a relationship, which is well worth the read.

In the Encounters portion, you are paired with men or women who Badoo believes may grab your attention.

You select an X or heart to make a decision about your possible pairing.
Although you can spot just a single meeting in an instant, how many pairings you can enjoy each day is unlimited.

In the People Nearby portion, you see folks in your region who like things you do.

You can get on board through Facebook or with an email address. Facebook is the recommended course, as Badoo will then populate sections from your Facebook account with your occupation, pictures, area, and how old you are. At that point, you can put in information about yourself. There is also an “interests” portion that shows thousands of possible pastimes that you can select.

Uploading a main image enables connection with other users. (It plays a huge role in your profile, so it must be good.) Additionally, you will be asked to validate your profile. You just photograph yourself duplicating the motion found in the cue. The image you send is only for verification purposes.

How to Locate Potential Matches

The app will indicate patrons geographically close to you with compatible passions. You can select profile photos and begin talking or expressing admiration for their user description.

If the other user and you both “like” one another’s user descriptions, your connection can possibly transform in just minutes from messaging each other to meeting up. Further, the app will indicate to you additional patrons you’ve come across and show the area and hour you came across them.

There’s also a portion like Tinder where you can swipe left or right through given user descriptions of patrons in your geographic region.

Tinder is a straightforward, user-friendly app for both casual and serious dating. Dating apps are only useful to their customers if they have a wide base of users (more swipes, higher odds of matching, better chance of going out with someone).

Signing up for the app has two routes: it can either import your personal info (name, photos, etc.) from Facebook, or take the long route and enter the information manually (once they verify your phone number).

Given the negative press Facebook’s gotten with data privacy, it’s a bit more comforting to just run through the process manually. Either way, signing up and creating a profile is pretty straightforward and painless. Compared to other dating apps that ask a series of more invasive questions, Tinder just asks you to throw a few photos up for the world to see, and write a short bio about yourself.

How to Locate Potential Matches

When creating your profile, Tinder asks for basic information like the gender you identify with and your sexual orientation. From there, you just need to set the distance you’re willing to travel.

For more dense cities like NYC, you shouldn’t need a wider radius than a few miles and you’re bound to find a ton of matches. For more rural/sprawling areas, you might want to think 20-30+ miles. The algorithm that gauges attractiveness has been pretty on point, and you won’t be disappointed with the quality of profiles you’re swiping on.

Once you match with other members, the floor is open for conversation. You’ll be matched into a private conversation where people feel each other out, and decide whether or not to go out. For psychological safety, Tinder makes it easy to unmatch or report disrespectful matches. Tap the red flag in the top-right corner to do either.

Tinder makes it really easy to find common ground with someone despite not having the long-form questionnaire about yourself that other apps use.
